COM 351: Assignment #2

Your second assignment is to write a news story that includes at least three sources. Two sources should be people you talk to in person or by phone or email. The third source should be a document. Examples include:

  • Press releases
  • Court records
  • Police reports
  • City hall records
  • Government documents
  • Research organization reports
  • Academic studies
  • Environmental reports

Story guidelines:

  • Please type your story, print it out and give me a copy of it by the start of class on Tuesday Feb. 15.
  • Do not post your story to your blog yet. Wait until I grade it and give it back to you.
  • You are not allowed to interview friends, relatives or family members.
  • Your story subject should be of interest to Florida readers.
  • Your story should contain news that is timely and relevant.
  • You may conduct interviews in person or by phone or by email.
  • You must shoot or obtain a photograph to illustrate your story.
  • Make sure your interview subjects know that your story will appear online for the world to see.
  • Your story must include your interview subjects’ first and last name, job title or occupation, age and town of residence.

Tips on how to approach the story:

  • If you aren’t following the news now, get up to speed and immerse yourself in what’s going on in Florida.
  • When writing the story, put the newest and freshest material at the top of the story.
  • Give readers enough background to understand what you are writing about, but try to break new ground.

The assignment is worth 10 points. Be aware of these point deductions:

  • 1 point off if you don’t cite at least three sources (two human sources and one document or record)
  • 1 point off if you misspell someone’s name
  • 1 points off if you have five or more AP style errors
