Up close: the Passion Butterfly

This common garden butterfly – a female Gulf Fritillary – stopped to drink nectar from flowers in my front yard earlier today. Butterflies drink through the part of their mouth that’s known as a proboscis. Once uncurled, the proboscis acts like a straw.
The Gulf Fritillary is also called the Passion Butterfly. Its caterpillars are poisonous, so many animals avoid eating them.
