The number of foreign correspondents working for American newspapers dropped to 234 in 2011, down from 307 in 2003, according to the American Journalism Review. Newspapers have continued cutting back on foreign coverage over the past three years – and so have U.S. television networks.
Non-profit journalism organizations are helping to fill the gap. Among them is the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, based in Washington, D.C.
The center’s executive director, Jon Sawyer, and his wife Kem Knapp Sawyer, contributing editor, spoke today at Flagler College in St. Augustine. They are on campus as part of the college’s Forum on Government and Public Policy.
They plan to give a lecture titled “Brave New World: Telling Global Stories in a New Media Age” at 7 p.m. tonight in Lewis Auditorium, 14 Granada St., in St. Augustine.
